Message because the intake valves should remain closed, so no way to get air into the cylinder to compress. You want to do a leakdown test instead-- injecting air into the cylinder through the spark plug hole and seeing if it holds pressure. If the engine is rotated such that both valves should be closed (or if you remove the cams entirely) then there should be barely any leakage of air. If your rings are good and there is still substantial air leakage, your valve job is bad. If the leakdown test is good, then there may be an issue with the lifters. During the test you can also listen for escaping air to determine where its coming from (intake/ exhaust/ crankcase).

"Foghorn Leghorn" is definitely not the guy to buy an engine from. I hope he does something for you in the way of a refund, but I would not hold my breath waiting for it.
